We begin our itinerary in Santa Gadea del Cid, neighbouring town to the former 9th century ruling cities of Castilla and Navarra. Declared an area of important historic and artistic cultural heritage, there are many examples of popular architecture in this province as well as some very impressive monuments. Some of the most important monuments here include the 16th century Gothic church of San Pedro, the 12th century Roman hermitage - Nuestra Señora de las Eras, the castle dating back to the 11th century even though it was reconstructed by Pedro López Manrique during the 15th century, the impressive 15th century village entrance and the many areas full of Medieval and Mudejar influence.
On the CL-625 we stop at Encío to visit the Roman churches of San Cosme and San Damián from the end of the 12th century. Continuing on the same road we stop at Ameyugo, the ancient territory of the Guevaras. This area has the 16th century church of Santa Maria, a medieval bridge and the Monumento al Pastor (shepherds monument), the work of the well known Víctor de los Ríos. We take the N-I now and arrive at Pancorbo, situated in the Montes Obaranes mountains. In the history of this area there were numerous battles over the Pancorbo castle, considered one of the most strategic entrances to Castilla. The most important monumental legacies here include the 16th century Santiago church, the 18th century medieval church of San Nicolás, the Del Cristo del Barrio hermitage and the Nuestra Señora del Camino hermitage (both of which are situated in a narrow pass), the Santa Marta castle and the 11th century Viejo castle, raised up on pre-roman ruins, the Santa Engracia castle from the end of the 18th century, situated high up on a narrow pass, the impressive town hall building and many of the typical Burgos style "Blasonadas" houses. From Pancorbo we continue on until we arrive at Miranda del Ebro, the second most important town in this province after Burgos. Amongst the most important monuments here are many churches including the 16th century Santa Maria, the Roman -Gothic style San Nicolás, the 17th -18th century Espíritu Santo and the 14th century San Juan Bautista as well as various ancestral homes from the 16th century, the 15th - 16th century college of Los Sagrados Corazones, which has the ancient San Francisco convent, the ruins of a 14th century castle , the town hall building, the 18th century Carlos II bridge which has two stone carved lions with the towns coat of arms and the La Picota or Rollo jurisdictions. In the surrounding are you'll find the interesting hermitage cave paintings of San Juan del Monte. Continuing on the N-I to the village of Arganzon, where we can visit the 14th - 15th century Gothic church Nuestra Señora de la Antigua which houses the Gordejuela family vault, the 16th century Baroque Santiago hospital, the numerous ancestral homes, the town hall building and the ancient medieval bridge. Taking the BU-P-7442 road to Trevino where we can enjoy the 13th century Gothic San Pedro church and the 16th century town hall building, the ancient stately palace of the Manrique de Lara. We then take the road to Laño stopping at Sanvicentejo de Treviño to enjoy the 12th century Roman hermitage. In Laño we finish our trip with the Cuevas Eremiticas (hermits caves). |
