We begin our interesting itinerary in Cruïlles with its Roman monastery, the San Miquel de Cruïlles, whose artefacts are on display in the D'Art de Girona museum.
We continue on the same road to Monells, with its spectacular display of Plaza Porticadas and take a stop in la Bisbal D'Empordà, the administrative centre of the region which also has a large ceramic industry. The most prominent building here is the Castle -Palace of Los Obispos de Gerona which has a very interesting combination of the various local architecture styles. We can also see the Puente Viejo and the numerous examples of modern houses in Les Voltes. Taking the C-255 we go on to Vullpellac where we find an impressive Gothic Renaissance palace. We continue on the same road until we arrive at Peratallada, an ancient walled town which has a Roman - Gothic palace which has been converted into a casino and the Roman parish church. On the way to Verges we enjoy stops in several different localities - Ullastret, known for its popular archaeological deposits left over during the transition from the bronze age to the iron age, as well as the ancient medieval part of town with its Gothic square and monographic museum in the chapel of Sant Andreu. Foixa - which has a large medieval castle and Verges - if you can visit during Semana Santa (Easter week) you can enjoy the spectacular Danza de la Muerte ( the dance of the dead ). Taking the GI-640 road now we arrive at Torroella de Montgrí, the former residence of King Juan I el Cazador ( the hunter ). There are many interesting monuments here including the Gothic military castle of Montgrí, the remains of the ancient city walls, numerous impressive stately houses and the Gothic church which holds the annual music festival. Taking the GI-641 we arrive in L'Estartit, the lovely coastal town where we can enjoy the selection of water sports available here. We finish our journey in the coastal town of Pals, where we visit the ancient area of El Pedro, which has the remains of ancient walls and a Gothic church as well as a prominent Golf Club and an interesting museum of underwater archaeology. |
