The coastal route in south Tenerife |
|
We begin our journey in the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, internationally renowned for its spectacular carnivals. There are many ancient buildings conserved in this area such as the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción church, where we can enjoy the range of individual style paintings left here, the San Juan castle or the monument of Los Caídos in the Plaza de España. Of course no visit here would be complete without visiting the La Plaza Alferés Provisional, the Laguna University Campus and the lovely port, which is one of the main ports in the Atlantic.
We take the C-822 until we arrive at Güimar, an old stately town where we visit the two ancient churches of Las Carboneras and Montaña Grande, find many archaeological deposits and go to the Don Martín viewpoint, where we can enjoy a superb panoramic view over the region. We continue on the road, observing the arid landscape of this area, taking a brief stop at the fishing village of Arico and El Porís where you can enjoy the water sports. We continue on the same road directly to Granadilla de Abona, a locality with its own unique archaeological style. Here you can enjoy the lovely El Médano beach, with its golden sand and ideal conditions for windsurfing. Don't forget to visit the surreal lunar landscape of Monte del Agua. Arriving at Granadilla de Abona, we take the C-821 road if we want to visit the Las Cañadas del Teíde natural park the largest as well as the oldest, of the four Archipelago National Parks on the Canaries. The Pico del Teide is 3,178 meters high and is still live. The Cañadas del Teide are formed by two vents, separated by the Los Roques de García, and is the highest reserve in the whole of Spain, with its land originally emerging from the Atlantic Ocean over a period of time. 22% of the vegetable species here are endemic as well as a large variety of different fauna consisting mainly of birds. Continuing on the road we arrive at San Miguel, a lively tourist area next to Arona and Adeje. Here we get to enjoy a superb panoramic view from the La Centinela viewing point. We then take the road on to El Roque, where we take a detour on a local road to arrive at Arona, an important tourist enclave, in large due to the fabulous beaches such as the Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and the Costa del Silencio. Amongst the most important historic constructions here are the 18th century parish church San Antonio de Abad and the Casa de la Correa. We return to the C-822, finishing our route in Adeje, which also has part of the famous Playa de las Américas beach. Here we can visit the 16th century Casa Fuerte, the 16th century Santa Úrsula church, which houses an impressive Mudejar coffered ceiling and the interesting museum of Sacred Art which was a former 17th century Franciscan Convent. |
