We begin our journey in the town of Vigo, whose historic area, better known as El Berbés, has the Mercado da Pedra commercial centre where we can buy many different things and the interesting Neoclassic La Porta do Sol concathedral church. Other interesting constructions here included the García Barbón, the Del Castro viewing point, the Celtic village ruins, the museum of the Castrelos, the former sculpture group Los Caballos de Oliveira and the 13th century Santa Maria church.
We go up to the Androa viewing point, which is next to the local zoo, here we get an incredible panoramic view over the area. At the quay of Vigo we take a boat over to the Las Illas Cíes islands, which have been declared a nature park and offer beautiful scenery and many species of flora and fauna. Here there are some of the best fine white sand beaches. We then return by boat to Vigo. We then take the C-650 on to Nigrán, known for the famous Playa de América beach, even though there are many other marvellous beaches such as the Samil. Here we can see the Priegue parish church and the lovely Monteferro countryside. We then take a local road to Gondomar, which has numerous country houses such as the A Touza, which is perfect for rural tourism, the Cadaval, Vilares, Allines and Cea, declared of national artistic heritage. We rejoin the local road and detour onto the C-550 to Baiona, a town which was more important than Vigo during the 18th century. Here we can enjoy the various monuments such as the 12th century Roman collegiate, the Monte Real fortress, the Condes de Gondomar and the Casa de Salgado. Here the Baiona beach is considered the most important but there are many other good ones such as the Ladeira, and the various important nautical clubs. We take another local road arriving at the locality of A Guarda, where we go up to the viewing point and enjoy the marvellous views over the town and the Virgen de la Roca monument. In the town we visit the 12th century Santa María la Real monastery, which has been declared a National Monument, the town's hermitage, the Iron Age hill fort of Santa Tegra also declared a historic artistic monument and the San Benito convent. We rejoin the road on to O Rosal where they produce delicious wines. We take the access to the N-550 to join onto the local road leading to Tomiño, which has remains of monasteries, Roman churches and the Tebra castle. On the N-551 we pass through Tui, a well conserved town near Portugal. Her we can visit the cathedral, the San Telmo church, the Santo Domingo monastery, the San Bartolomé church, the San Julian hermitage and the Monte de Alolia nature park. We then take the road onto Caldelas, known for its soothing thermal waters. At the end of our journey we take the N-550 to Porriños, which has an important ecological reserve worth seeing. |
