Routes through the white villages of Cadiz. |
|
This lovely route starts in Zahara de la Sierra, a beautiful town founded in the 8th century by the Arabs and recognised for its wealth of monumental national heritage. There is an impressive baroque church, the Santa Maria de Mesa next to the historic Islamic castle which has marvellous views over the Grazalema natural park. Where the mountain ranges consist of limestone and dolomite, with karstic formations with numerous canyons such as the Bocaleones and Gargantia Verde, dolomites, caves, carbon formations and caverns such as El Complejo Hundidero - Gato, which is considered the oldest cave in Andalucia. The area consists of typical Mediterranean vegetation and a large variety of fauna, with an abundance of different bird species.
3 km along in the direction of Grazalema we take a path and drive to the lovely La Ermita de la Garganta Verde. From here we continue by foot. Grazalema is situated between the Sierra del Pinar and Endrinal, whose wealth of artistic heritage is reflected in the La Encarnacion church, the neo - classic Aurora church and the San Josè church and the ancient carmalite convent with its incredible Arabic minaret. Bordering on the Endrinal mountain range we arrive at Villaluenga del Rosario, the highest of the white villages on this route. Here we can visit their wealth of culture, the La Ermita de San Gregorio and the spectacular bull ring constructed from rock. In the surrounding area we can visit any of the numerous pre-historic and dolomite caves. Here we detour through la Manga de Villaluenga, arriving at Benaocaz where the Ermita del Calvario is conserved as well as the spectacular baroque style Town Hall and the historic Sierra museum. Now we head to Ubrique, the oldest and most industrial town in this area and route. Famous for the production of leather objects and goods as well as the numerous historic monuments such as the San Antonio church, raised on an ancient chapel, the Capuchinos Convent, the Nuestra Señora church and the San Pedro church - municipal library. There are also many ruins left here from previous civilizations which represent the ancient roman Ocurris. We rejoin the road to Benalhoma and the lush forest where you can see the roman castle Tavinza and visit the town of Benahoma famous for the Fuente de Nacimiento. On the same road we arrive in El Bosque, dominated by the impressive mountain range and considered one of the most beautiful areas on this route. With quaint streets and glorious monuments such as the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church and Molino del Duque. Nowadays this area is famous for two different sports, fishing in the trout river and free fall flight on the delta wings or paragliding on the slopes. |
