|
We begin our journey in Vinarós, enclaved in the region of Baix Maestrat. A town of industry, tourism and impressive monuments such as the 16th century Asunción church and the Plaza de Toros (bull ring)
On the N-232 we pass through Morella, the capital of the Els Ports region. This is a walled city in which you'll find the remains of a medieval castle, the 13th-14th century Gothic church of Santa María, the royal Gothic convent of San Francisco, the town hall building and the los Piquer houses amongst others. We take a detour via the CV-120 until Forcau to see the lovely urban part and some of their impressive palaces. Taking the A-226 now we arrive at the medieval walled city of Mirambel. In the surrounding area we find Zorita del Maestrazgo where we can visit the la Virgen de la Balma sanctuary, where those that are possessed by the devil or evil spirits come to be cured. We take another detour on the CV-15 to Villafranca del Maestrat, where we can visit the Gothic town hall building, the renaissance church of Salvador, the sanctuary of La Virgen del Llosar and the Portal de Sant Roc. On the outskirts we find the town of Ares del Maestrat, which as well as being the end of this region is also the highest point in the province of Alicante. There is also the Remigia prehistoric cave here with original Levantine cave paintings. Taking the CV-128 we arrive in the locality of Catí, one of the best preserved villages in this region with a wealth of cultural heritage, including the impressive town hall building, the Gothic church, the 15th century Santa Ana hermitage, as well as numerous stately houses and chapels. Near this area you'll find the town of L'Avellá, famous for their waters, which are rich in minerals and medicinal properties, and the sanctuary of the same name. At the end, on the CV-10 we finish our route in the locality of Sant Mateu, ancient headquarters of the Orden de Montesa. The most interesting monuments here include the Roman Gothic arch priest church of San Mateo, which has a very interesting museum inside, the Las Agustinas convent, the palace of Marqués de Villores, the palace of Borrull and the town hall building. |
