The cultural route of the Guanches |
|
We begin our journey in the capital of the island, La Palmas de Gran Canary, considered the town with the best climate throughout the world, by the American press. Here we visit the Santa Ana cathedral, the Casa de Colón, which has documents and objects left from the Columbian era, the La Luz castle, raised on a reef to protect it from the marauding pirates of that era, and is now considered a historic monument, the ancient Los Canarios caves, formerly inhabited by the Guanches and the lovely Pérez Galdós theatre named and dedicated to the writer.
The Plaza de Santa Ana, where you find yourself in the popular Vegueta area, the Triana area with the offices, banks and the best shops full of many internationally recognised brand names, the area of Arenales where you can enjoy a tranquil day on the Alcaravaneras beach and the lovely Canteras beach considered one of the best in the world.. On the C-813 we arrive at the locality of Arucas, which has an interesting display of popular island archtecture and design with pretty white houses adorned with stones. The most important monuments here are the 20th century Gothic San Juan church, the modern Town Hall building and the Casa de la Cultura, raised on a 18th century building. We then detour on the CG-2 road taking us onto Guía, famous for their production of Queso de Flor cheese and handcrafted knifes. Here you can view the important 17th and 18th century monuments such as the Santa Catalina church, the San Antonio convent and the impressive town hall building. We continue on the same road now to Gáldar, the ancient Guanche kingdom which still has a wealth of archaeological remains, such as the Granero de Valerón, numerous caves excavated in the rock and the famous Cueva Pintada (painted cave). Other monuments to enjoy here are the Santiago de los Caballeros 18th century church, raised on an ancient Guanche construction. Continuing on the CG-2 until Agaete, which is considered one of the most beautiful areas on the island and has conserved some very interesting monuments such as the 19th century La Concepción church. We then detour on the right hand road which takes us to the impressive Puerto de la Nieves, formed out of natural reefs.. We then finish our journey taking the local road until Tejeda, renowned for the wealth of important monoliths - El Roque Rublo, the highest in the world, El Roque Bentiaga and El Roque Fraile so called for its morphology. In the same area we can visit the Cumbres Nature Park and enjoy the range of flora and fauna species available. |
