We start the journey in Mojàcar, a lovely coastal town situated on one of the Sierra de Cabrera hills. the neo - classic La Ermita monument, the Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores and the gothic Santa Maria church all stand out in this area as places of historic interest.
On the way to Sorbas we stop at Vera to admire the remains of the La Alcazaba and again in Almanzora to visit the caves. The town of Sorbas rises spectacularly over a ravine. Here you will find the ancient remains of an arabic wall. One of the most interesting areas in the Villa is the impressive Paraje natural del Karts, where you can see the numerous characteristic formations of marine chalk deposits leaving many chasms and caves of which the Del Tesoro and Del Agua are the most famous. We return to the road and arrive at Tabernas, a lovely town situated in the arid dessert, an area famous for the many American westerns which have been filmed here over the years. The Paraje Natural del Desierto de Taberna consists of a labyrinth of ravines, gullies and dried out river beds, despite this numerous species of birds have successfully adapted to these difficult climatic conditions. From Taberna we are directed to Nijár, a town situated at the foot of the expansive Sierra de Alhamilla. There is a wealth of local cultural heritage to enjoy such as the Santa Maria de la Asunción church and the ancient Arabic quarters. Last but not least we arrive at the towns of Los Nietos and San José where they boast some spectacular monuments and displays of popular architecture. |
