The route round the borders of Bidasoa. |
|
We begin our itinerary in Orizki, one of the lovely localities that pass through the Señorio de Bertiz nature park, integrated in the large Bertiz palace with a botanical garden, exhibition and conference buildings, a hostel, an open air café and the Tourism Consortium offices of the region. The El Señorio de Bertiz is an Atlantic forest where the abundant rainfall and gentle temperatures all year round are perfect for the flora and fauna. The legend goes that Pedro Ciga, a rich American Indian, brought to fruition numerous plantations, created the botanical gardens and constructed the palace high above so he could see his lover who lived in Biarritz. After his death the park was passed to the Diputación Floral de Navarra and contains more than 120 different species of exotic flora and a large variety of fauna.
We take the local road and arrive in Oieregi, a picturesque place with a medieval bridge and various 18th century towers in need of repair. Taking the N-121 we pass through Narbarte, where we can see the various stone houses and palacial houses typical to the Navarra region. Continuing on the same road we take a brief stop in Legasa before taking the turning for Sunbilla, here we can enjoy the magnificent countryside full of cornfields and meadows which contrast with the typical country houses. Arriving in Sunbilla, situated in the folds of Mendaur, we can visit the Caserío and an enormous medieval bridge. Bordering the Bidasoa on the N-121, we detour into the locality of Arantza, integrated in the region of Cinco Villas (five cities) and situated in a pocket of Mendaur, which has a Gothic Renaissance church and the medieval tower of Aranibar. We continue on the local road in the direction of Igantzi, which is also part of the Cinco Villas area. In this town we take cemetery road until we arrive at Monte Frain where there is a radio booster, which we can use to enjoy superb panoramic views over the region and surrounding areas. We rejoin the N-121 and take the exit for Etxalar, a town famous for its pigeon lofts, which use an ancient network system to hunt pigeons, also here there is a country house and a church with a cementry garden. We return to the N-121 to take another detour to the locality of Lesaka, which ahs a very interesting style of architecture, which is visible in the picturesque streets and stately houses. In the centre of town you can see the medieval fortress of Zabaleta, Minyurinea or the 15th century Casaherna, as well as the lovely San Martín de Tours church. At the end of our journey we rejoin the N-121 to Bera / Vera de Bidasoa, which has the Altzate area where you'll find the impressive Itzea country house and the Los Baroja house, where the famous writer and his family lived, as well as the local Baroque town hall building and the magnificent San Esteban church which has a magnificent original church organ. |
