Route through the Aracena and Las Sierras |
|
We begin our journey in Aroche where we can appreciate the ancient walls, fortresses and El Castillo - Plaza de Toros. From Aroche we take the N-432 in the direction of Cortegana, a town in the midst of the Aracena mountain range, where we can visit the beautiful 12th century Gothic church which has recently been restored, as well as the Divino Mudejar church. We then take the A-470 road until Almonaster la Real where we have a brief stop to enjoy the Arabic Mosque.
We join the road again until we arrive at Alájar, a small mountainous area where the La Peña de Arias Montano raises up, and next to it is the la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, an area famed for the religious devotion and superb views. The town was a place of retreat for the advisors of Prince Felipe II in previous times and is famous nowadays for its large Romeria festival, celebrated on the 8th of September annually. From here we continue on to the town of Aracena, the capital of this wonderful region. Conquered by the crusaders for the Portuguese throne and handed to the Orden del Temple for the Castilla monarchy in the 12th century. There are preserved ruins of the crusader's Castillo, its gothic church and don't forget to visit La Gruta de las Maravillas, considered the largest and most romantic of all the Spanish caves, with the legend of the hidden true love between the goblin and the lady miller. Taking the A-461 we go to Minas de Riotinto, the centre of this ancient mining region, with excavations going back to the pre - historic times. The majority of the mines here are tin, pyrite or copper. You can visit the Cerro Colorado, the oldest working mine in the world as well as the interesting and educational Mining Museum. The local countryside has a surreal reddish tinge because of the large amount of copper present in this area. From here we continue on to the road to the mining town of Zalamea la Real then onto to Valverde where we change to the N-435. This represents on of the most important areas in the picturesque region of Andévalo where you can see the famous La Ermita de la Trinidad and the Señora del Reposo. This area is also renowned for the fabrication of working boots with the same name. |
